BIG BANG DISRUPTION

What does a food fight among Late Renaissance art historians tell us about the changing nature of technological innovation? Larry Downes, co-author of the forthcoming book, “Big Bang Disruption: Strategy in the Age of Devastating Innovation,” will describe the new model for market disruption, one based on low-cost experimentation, the combining of off-the-shelf component parts, and collaboration with early users on everything from design to funding. When new products enter the market better, cheaper and more customized than those with which they compete, the result for incumbents can be deadly.

About our speaker.

Larry Downes is coauthor of the new book BIG BANG DISRUPTION: Strategy in the Age of Devastating Innovation. He is an Internet industry analyst and author on the impact of disruptive technologies on business and policy. His first book, Unleashing the Killer App, was one of the biggest business bestsellers of the early 2000s. He is a columnist for Forbes and CNET and writes regularly for other publications including USA Today and the Harvard Business Review. He lives in Berkeley, California.

Doctors had given Anita Moorjani just hours to live when she arrived at the hospital in a coma on the morning of February 2nd, 2006. Unable to move as a result of the cancer that had ravaged her body for almost four years, Anita entered another dimension, where she experienced great clarity and understanding of her life and purpose here on earth. She was given a choice of whether to return to life or not, and chose to return to life when she realized that “heaven” is a state and not a place. This subsequently resulted in a remarkable and complete recovery of her health. Anita’s riveting talk will inspire you to transform your life by living more authentically, discovering your greatest passions, transcending your deepest fears, and living from a place of pure joy. Her true story will radically alter your current beliefs about yourself, your purpose on earth, your health, your relationships, and your life!

About our speaker:

Anita Moorjani has become something of an international sensation since her book “Dying to be Me” hit the New York Times bestsellers list only two weeks after its release in March, 2012. She had experienced what most people never have; she “crossed over,” and came back to share what she learned. Her remarkable NDE (Near-death experience) and subsequent healing from end-stage cancer is one of the most amazing cases ever recorded. Doctors had given her mere hours to live when she arrived at the hospital in a coma on the morning of February 2, 2006. Unable to move, and in a deep coma as the result of the cancer that had ravaged her body for nearly four years, Anita entered another dimension, where she experienced great clarity and understanding of her life and purpose here on earth, and was given a choice of whether to return to life or continue on into death. Anita chose to return to life when she realized that “heaven” is a state, not a place. This subsequently resulted in a remarkable and complete recovery of her health within days of her return.
Born in Singapore of Indian parents, Anita has lived in Hong Kong most of her life. She is multi-lingual, and from the age of two, grew up speaking English, Cantonese, and an Indian dialect simultaneously. She had been working in the corporate field for several years before her cancer diagnosis in 2002.

She is the embodiment of the truth that we all have the inner power and wisdom to overcome even life’s most adverse situations, as she is the living proof of this possibility.

World-renowned author, Dr. Wayne Dyer has been instrumental in bringing Anita’s story to public attention, and wrote the foreword to her book. He subsequently invited her to appear on his TV special, “Wishes Fulfilled”, which airs frequently on PBS.

Following the global success of her book, which is being translated and published into 34 different languages, Anita has regularly been interviewed on various prime time television shows around the world, including three times on “Fox News” in New York, “The Jeff Probst Show” in Hollywood, cable TV’s “National Geographic International”, “The Pearl Report” in Hong Kong, “HeadStart” with Karen Davila in the Philippines, CNN documentary in production, among many others.

She inspires her audience to transform their lives by living more authentically, discovering their greatest passions, transcending their deepest fears, and living from a place of pure joy, and has the ability to explain such mind-bending concepts as timelessness, non-duality, and simultaneous realities, in such simplified terms that everyone can understand.

Anita is currently one of the most sought after inspirational speakers in the world and addresses sell out audiences all over the globe.

Creating Outcomes We Want One Foot at a Time

As a Cancer Survivor, TV show contestant, and accomplished athlete, Chad Crittenden has achieved many things in the hopes of inspiring others. After major surgery, and against the odds, he has faced challenges with optimism and courage, showing us that we are able to shape our circumstances in order to create the outcomes we want.

About our speaker:

After teaching 8 years as a primary Bilingual teacher, Chad Crittenden was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. A drastic decision was made to have major surgery, which eventually saved his life. After an amazingly speedy recovery, Chad was chosen to compete on the TV show Survivor Vanuatu: Islands of Fire. Chad excelled on the show, using his exposure on TV as a way of illustrating how one can overcome obstacles, and he’s never looked back. During his post-Survivor years, he has been sponsored for dozens of triathlons, including XTERRA. Chad has also competed and won medals in Snowboarding and Mountain Biking, went on to complete the NYC Marathon, and in September of 2012, reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro as part of the CAFrica team. This expedition was successful in raising significant funds and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Chad lives in Northern California with his family of 4, has been cancer-free for 10 years now, and feels very fortunate for all that he has.

Secrets of successful entrepreneurs: Why some succeed while many fail?

In this session, I identify what differentiates serial and successful entrepreneurs from others. I had a chance to co-found the TiE Institute for entrepreneurs in silicon valley and interact with large number of entrepreneurs. I also had worked with entrepreneurs and entrepreneur organizations in US, India and Europe and I will share the essence of my learning gained through interviews, coaching, research and personal experience and documented in the upcoming book ‘From Smart to Wise’.

About our speaker

Prasad is the CEO of the Kaipa Group in California and works with companies and senior executives in the areas of innovation, leadership development and coaching. He is a senior research fellow and a visiting professor at Indian School of Business (ISB) and was the founding Executive Director of the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) and raised multi-million dollar funding to initiate two research cells–SBI Cell for Public Leadership and Biocon Cell for Innovation Management in CLIC. Core themes for Prasad’s research are wisdom leadership, Indian models of innovation and leadership, affordable innovation, transformational leadership and mental models. He was a Smith Richardson Visiting Fellow at Center for Creative Leadership between 2010-2011 and is currently an advisor to Business FAC of Fetzer Institute. Prasad taught executive education programs organized by INSEAD, LBS, Tuck and IIM Bangalore in addition to ISB.

Prasad has been an advisor and coach focusing on innovation and leadership since 1990 for about 120 C-level executives in Global Fortune 500 companies. Clients included Adobe, Boeing, Disney, Johnson & Johnson, Maxim and Oracle as well as global/entrepreneurial companies like Aztec, Advanta, BAE Systems, Lunar Design, Mastek, Olixir, Polaris, State Bank of India and Scintera Networks. The purpose of Prasad’s innovation/leadership coaching is to ignite the genius within individuals. Prasad’s unique competence is in helping his clients find their next significant step and take it. He found that unless he helps clients to examine their signature strengths that have turned into “core incompetence” and kept them stuck, it is difficult to ignite and channel their creativity to come up with innovative decisions, products, and services. He assists clients in becoming effective in managing people as well as oneself (personal mastery), getting reenergized and building new capacities, and taking more risks, in addition to innovative and strategic decisions.

Prasad co-founded the Entrepreneur Institute for TiE in the Silicon Valley in 2002 to assist entrepreneurs develop soft skills and connect, engage and co-create effectively with others in the ecosystem. Over 13,000 entrepreneurs have gone through TiE Institute programs. He is a part-time faculty member at the Saybrook University and works with students in the areas of creativity and innovation, transformational learning and leadership. Prasad is/was on the board of directors/trustees for International Leadership Association, Marico Innovation Foundation, Samskruta Bharati US, Integral Leadership Review, Lead India 2020, Society for Organizational Learning (SoL), Aankhen, Turning Point Global, Intertec Communications, Hindu University of North America, and Catalyst.

Prasad also worked as an educator/consultant with 100+ companies like Areva, AT&T, A.P. Moeller Maersk, Canara Bank, Exxon Mobil, Ford, Pepsi (Quaker Oats), Navteq, Sasken, Sun, Syngenta, and Union Bank in the areas of leadership, change management, innovation and management team development. Cisco and HP have worked with Prasad in developing innovative business models for creating a successful new business and in innovating unique, “brandable” product designs that are consistent with their culture.

As a senior manager in Apple, Prasad was asked to create an educational menu for Apple engineers using innovative learning approaches. In 1999, as a research fellow in the Apple University, with a charter to help design ‘a learning processor that augments human intelligence,’ Prasad interviewed high achievers and exceptional people researching how they learn (and ‘unlearn’), create, communicate, relate and lead.

Prasad got his doctorate in physics, and as a professor in the University of Utah helped build an international research laboratory with Dr. Ed Haskell. Athena Interactive released three award winning CD-ROMs for leaders based on his learning interface concepts and his pyramid building (thinking in three dimensions) methodology.

Prasad is writing a book titled ‘From Smart to Wise’ with Navi Radjou for Jossey Bass (March 2013) and has published an e-book ‘Discontinuous Learning: Igniting Genius Within by Aligning Self, Work, and Family’ and many of his writings, blog, and tools are available on his website (http://www.kaipagroup.com). He also writes a blog regularly on innovation and leadership in HBR.org and has published articles in Business Week, Economic Times etc. He twitters using handle – @pkaipa.

Prasad is married to Dr. Vinoda and is father of Pravin (26) and Vidya (22). He enjoys exploring and reinterpreting ancient wisdom (and its application in developing highly effective and authentic leaders), photography (http://pkaipa.smugmug.com), listening to classical music, and playing tennis.

The Future of Search

Hollywood has often portrayed the future where humans can exchange information with computers, delegate tasks to, and ask questions of (such as HAL, KITT, and COMPUTER from Star Trek). Since then, the Internet was become essential,  a web of pages evolved into a web of people, and mobile smart phones have become ubiquitous throughout society.

Dr. Patrick Riley proposes that the future of search is in the intelligent personal assistant, a HAL in your pocket, and it’s right around the corner.

About our speaker:

Patrick is the founder and CEO of Ark.com, a modern people search engine. Patrick built his first search engine while an undergraduate at Berkeley because he was tired of using Alta Vista to find academic articles. During his Ph.D., he created a search platform that captures and indexes everything said on broadcast television, in an effort to see how social media correlates to television. Patrick has published numerous computer science articles with the IEEE and ACM, as well as having ten years of industry experience.

Onlyness.

The foundational element of all entrepreneurship or success in the market begins with celebrating each human and, more specifically, something I’ve termed onlyness.

Onlyness is that thing that only one particular person can bring to a situation. It includes the skills, passions, and purpose of each one of us. Onlyness is fundamentally about honoring each person, first as we view ourselves, and second as we are valued. Each of us is standing in a spot that no one else occupies. That unique point of view is born of our accumulated experience, perspective, and vision. Embracing onlyness means that, as contributors, we must embrace our history, not deny it. This includes both our “dark” and our “light” sides. Because when we deny our history, vision, perspective, we are also denying a unique point of view, that which only we can bring to the situation.

Each onlyness is essential for solving new problems, as well as for finding new solutions to old problems. Without it, people are simply cogs in a machine—dispensable and undervalued—and we’re back to the 800-pound gorilla approach. With it, gazelles are singularly unique and able to contribute meaningfully.
It’s not that everyone will, but that anyone can.

About our speaker.

Nilofer Merchant has gone from admin to CEO to board member of a NASDAQ-traded company along her 20 year career, gathering monikers such as “the Jane Bond of Innovation” along the way for her ability to guide Fortune 500 and startup companies through impossible odds.

She’s worked for major companies like Apple (with Steve Jobs) and Autodesk (personally hired and fired by Carol Bartz) and startups in the early days of the Web (Golive/ later bought by Adobe). And Logitech, Symantec, HP, Yahoo, VMWare, and many others have turned to her guidance to develop new product strategies, enter new markets, defend against competitors, and optimize revenues. And, Merchant is one of the few people who can say they’ve fought a competitive battle against Microsoft and won, for Symantec’s Anti-Virus $2.1B annual business. She has personally launched more than 100 products, netting $18B in sales, with expertise in Europe and US markets. Today she serves on boards for both public and private companies.

The 11 Rules for Creating Value in the #SocialEra, published by Harvard Business Review in 2012 follows her previous book, The New How (Oreilly, 2010), on Collaborative work. She lectures on innovation, board governance, and marketing at Stanford University.

Automation Will Bring Back Manufacturing

The US lives at least 4% above its means. That is, our balance of trade is such that we depend on borrowing to allow a living standard well above domestic production of goods and services. MOST OF THAT IS MANUFACTURED GOODS. It would take a 40% increase of manufacturing output to bring the balance of manufactured goods into balance. Two large terms dominate the imbalance in manufactured goods; electronics and sewn items, e.g., garments. Was that cell phone or pair of pants made in the US? Almost certainly no.
R&D at Georgia Tech and a single inspiration by one of its professors appears to open the way for domestic production of clothing at less cost than is now experienced in China and elsewhere in the Far East. SoftWear Automation, Inc. has started an effort supported by the Department of Defense’s DARPA that aims to build work-cells for the automated cutting and sewing of fabric. The effort is to enhance the capability to respond rapidly to needs for sewn items in the case of surprise military need by bringing most of the garment industry back. This is achieved through a high-tech applications of a single idea, the real measure of displacement in sewing is thread count of the passing fabric, not inches or meters. This enables accurate and fully automated sewing even when significant distortions of the fabric are present, the reason automation has not been cost effective to date. The patented technology should convert a labor-intensive industry to one that is capital-intensive and economical anywhere. But the thread counting method requires very modern cost-effective technologies: machine vision at high rates and high performance servo control of many motions.
Now we need tackle the automation of electronics manufacturing so that it is as inexpensive to produce cell phones here as elsewhere. That and similar should allow the US and other advanced nations to be self sufficient again.
